Core design principles - Decentralization: NthLink avoids central authorities for discovery. Nodes publish lightweight descriptors and cryptographic proofs, enabling peers to find valid linking paths without a single index. - Depth-aware discovery: Applications can express the "n" in nth-degree (e.g., 2nd-degree introductions, 4-hop routing) and receive ranked, capacity-aware paths that meet latency, trust, or cost constraints. - Privacy by design: NthLink supports selective disclosure and onion-like path obfuscation so intermediary nodes only learn what’s necessary to forward requests, reducing data leakage across hops. - Interoperability: The protocol is agnostic to transport — it works over IP, neighbor-to-neighbor mesh links, or application-layer overlays — and uses extensible metadata schemas for compatibility with social graphs, IoT catalogs, and service registries. How it works (high level) Each participant advertises minimal link metadata: identity fingerprint, declared services or attributes, available forwarding capabilities, and cryptographic attestations. Querying nodes issue depth-limited discovery requests that propagate with capability filters. Intermediate nodes respond with candidate paths or summaries; the originator then selects a path and establishes an end-to-end session using mutual authentication and optional payment or routing incentives. Path selection can optimize for latency, reliability, trust score, or resource consumption. Use cases - Social introductions: A user can request a “3rd-degree trusted introduction” to an expert without exposing their full social graph or requiring a central directory. - Mesh IoT routing: Sensors in a dynamic mesh use NthLink for multi-hop routing that adapts to battery life and link quality while preserving device identities and roles. - Service discovery in microservices: Distributed services locate reachable dependency chains and negotiate QoS across multiple administrative domains. - Resilient communications: Humanitarian networks and ad-hoc disaster deployments use depth-controlled routing when infrastructure is degraded. Challenges and future work While NthLink promises scalability and privacy, it must handle path explosion in large graphs, mitigate malicious path advertisement, and align economic incentives for forwarding. Ongoing work focuses on efficient pruning algorithms, reputation systems for path reliability, and compact attestation formats. NthLink represents a useful abstraction for modern distributed systems that require flexible, controlled linking across multiple hops. By balancing decentralization, privacy, and practical route selection, it opens new possibilities for secure, interoperable discovery in tomorrow’s interconnected environments.
